The cottage itself was decent, and the man who checked us in was lovely. The awkward part was checkout: nobody had told us it was at 10AM, so we were still inside when a staff member came to clean. She got upset and argued with us for a couple of minutes. When we calmly said we hadn’t known the time, she replied things like “oh COME ON!” and insisted we should have known. It was strange and a shame. Hopefully the man at check-in can help the rest of the staff handle guests better.

Having laundry facilities on site was a real bonus while we were road-tripping around the island. Our cottage at Birchwood Cottages had all the comforts and conveniences that made it feel like home, and the gentleman at the front office was friendly and helpful. It was a pleasure chatting with him.

There’s a butcher and coffee shop close by, so we had what we needed nearby. Our standalone unit also had a well-equipped kitchen for making coffee and grilling dinner, plus a cozy, comfortable bed and a shower with good pressure.

The room was very clean and had plenty of space, with a kitchen, shower and washing machine. We found it a very good deal for a family or group, and it’s an easy walk into town. It’s a family business, and the host was super friendly. Bella, their lovely dog, enjoys a pat, and Barcaddi is the lovely three-coloured cat.

We came back from a stormy day at Milford Sound to a comfortable bed, nice linens and efficient heaters, which were very welcome. The hosts were delightful, and they even surprised us with fresh milk for tea. Our cottage was nearest the road, but the surrounding plants and shrubs blocked the noise and made it feel secluded. Everything was cozy, clean and comfortable.
