Haka House Wellington

Phoenix at reception was lovely. The other staff weren't very welcoming, though. Even when I said hello, they didn't acknowledge me. I'm specifically talking about the red-haired guy. My twin room was comfortable, but there was no aircon. Luckily it wasn't hot during my stay. TV casting didn't work. Otherwise, I enjoyed my stay.

The supermarket is right across the road, and the museum, marina, restaurants and other spots are close too. The marked path up Mount Victoria starts just around the corner. Staff were friendly and helpful, and after the 10am checkout you can stay in the lounge, sometimes for the whole day. It’s good value. If you want more room, paying a few dollars extra for a dorm with fewer people makes sense. The bathrooms, kitchen and dining areas were reasonably clean. Just clean up after yourself. Street noise was nonexistent from my room, though sounds from the dining area carried a bit. It wasn’t bad, and dorm guests shouldn’t expect silence.

I stayed for 14 days and found it comfortable. The kitchen and bathroom were clean throughout, and the room was tidy, though cramped for doing anything else. One disappointment was that our bedsheet wasn’t changed once during the whole stay. We’d booked a two-bed dorm, but the guy at reception was so nice that he upgraded us to a double room. The beds were really nice, but the bathrooms and kitchen felt quite dated. The showers in particular are tiny, with barely any room to stand or put your things. It’s a basic hostel, and the website makes it look a bit nicer than it is. I’d probably try one of the other hostels next time.
