Okauia House, Matamata

The guest laundry deserves a mention: I could do my washing in a fully private laundry room, and stain remover powder was included. The shower is something else, even compared with the nicest places around the world. There are also heated bathroom floors and a heated towel rack, plus a hot tub. I loved the views of horses and cows in the distance, the smart TV, bed, sectional couch, and the kitchenette tucked into its own section. My only regret is not booking more nights. I’d rather drive 2-4 hours each way to see an attraction than stay somewhere else. It’s our second time in New Zealand and we’ll be back. Next time we’ll stay at least 3-4 nights so we can visit Wairere Falls, Hobbiton again, Rotorua for the glow worms, and the Redwood tree walk again. STAY HERE!!!!!!!!

Miriam was a friendly, welcoming and helpful host, and even the cats came over to say hello. The guest suite at Okauia House was modern, spacious, very comfortable and had everything we needed. There’s a set of Lord of the Rings DVDs to watch, which feels just right after the Movie Set tour. Matamata worked perfectly as our base for several days, with good roads connecting it to other places on the North Island. The location is very quiet and only a few minutes from town, where there’s a good choice of restaurants and supermarkets. We had a lovely stay and will be back next time we’re on the North Island.

We’d happily come back. The place is peaceful and beautiful, even more so in person than in the photos. Everything was spotless and thoughtfully furnished, and we felt comfortable right away. The owners were warm and genuinely attentive. We couldn’t find anything to fault.

Miriam was a lovely host, and the place made for a beautiful stay in Matamata. Hobbiton movie set is nearby, and the town has a few Lord of the Rings touches.
