The Grasshopper Hostal Plaza de Armas

You're only minutes from the main square, which is the one good thing here. The staff were unfriendly and no help. At night, people coming and going woke us several times because the rooms are so noisy. They were cold because of poor insulation, and not very well finished either, with curtains that didn't even cover the whole window. The breakfast was the worst we had in three weeks of traveling through Ecuador and Peru.

The location is the sole positive. We paid for a balcony room but got a small double that smelled really bad. The WiFi didn't work, and breakfast was limited to butter with jam.

When I arrived, there was no room available, even though I'd booked through Decolar and had paid everything before the trip. The owner suggested taking me to another hostel far from the historic center, then said the amount I'd paid was too little and I should pay the difference. She kept insisting I pay more for over an hour and didn't seem bothered that they had no rooms. Eventually, I got Decolar to place me in another hostel. At that new place we got exactly what we'd booked, because the photos this hostel provides don't match the actual place.
