What disappointed me most was how unreliable the service felt, especially by the end of my stay at Casa de Palos. I had confirmed room service breakfast for my last morning with the manager the night before. It was meant to arrive after the kitchen staff came in at 7:15 a.m., but nothing showed up then. After I followed up several times, breakfast finally came late and wrong: I’d asked for scrambled eggs and got fried eggs. A new staff member took the plate back, and a young woman who also seemed new tried to fix it by putting scrambled eggs on the same plate. The oil from the fried eggs was still all over it, so it wasn’t appetizing. I’d also asked for a cappuccino and was willing to pay. The staff member agreed, then brought black coffee instead. He told me it was his first day and he didn’t know how to use the machine. He’d tried heating milk in a kettle and adding it to the coffee. I told him to leave it, and gave up on the coffee. I sent the hotel several WhatsApp messages during all this, but got no replies. By the fourth day, they’d stopped responding to my messages altogether. A note in the dining room invited guests to leave a positive review in return for a free coffee. I’ve seen that sort of incentive before, but it seemed odd when even getting a basic coffee had been such a struggle. It could explain some of the very positive reviews that don’t match what I experienced. The other problem was the water. On my first morning, the pressure was poor and the water only lukewarm. It happened again on the third afternoon and the fourth morning. A manager, or someone acting as one, tried to explain, but I couldn’t make sense of what he said. A few other guests had mentioned water problems in Google reviews too. I was in Room 10. The door could be locked, but the windows, which are almost as high as the doors, didn’t lock, and the lock on the door seemed fake. Sleep was difficult for other reasons as well. Music from a nearby club could be heard at night from inside the rooms, and a very loud pump on the hotel grounds kept switching on and off. Even check-in started badly: the bathroom mat was wet and dirty, though staff replaced it quickly after I mentioned it. Some staff had been kind and tried to help on earlier days, but service overall was inconsistent and poorly managed. For the price and the way Casa de Palos is promoted, it fell short of simpler, cheaper places where I’ve had much better attention and hospitality. If you arrive with very low expectations, you might be okay. Service makes a big difference in hospitality, and that’s where this stay let me down.

The coffee terrace is a lovely place to take your time and relax, and the garden is really cute. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were very kind. It’s a beautiful place to stay in Tarapoto, and I’d recommend it. I’d come back without hesitation.

The setting has a real jungle feel, and the rooms were affordable. We had a few issues, but the staff handled them well and were good at sorting things out. A few things to know before you go: there weren’t trash cans or water in the room, and no fridge either, though the staff were happy to keep our things in their fridges. Roosters start up around 4 a.m., and people in Tarapoto usually get up early. Water being unavailable late at night or early in the morning is a common issue in Tarapoto. If they offer you a choice, ask for a second-floor room, as those are the best.

I’d recommend this place to anyone. It was great value, with a beautiful property and bedroom, and the best hotel I stayed in across South America.

There’s a lovely rustic feel to the place, with green shared areas and decor that give it a great atmosphere. My room was comfortable, the bathroom was clean, and the staff were friendly. The stay also comes with what I thought was the best coffee in Tarapoto for breakfast.
