Jolito and his family made me feel very welcome, and I’d definitely stay with them again. It felt like a real homestay, with a private bedroom in the family home. My room was simple, but large, very clean, and quiet. Jessa and her cousin picked me up from the bus station late at night, then walked with me to the port for the ferry to Malapascua island the next day. The port is very close, so the location is great if you need to stay near Maya port. They made sure I had what I needed and shared how difficult it’s been to rebuild everything after the hurricanes. They’re starting over, and I wish them the best of luck.

We felt very unsafe, and finding the house on your own was nearly impossible. The staff didn’t speak with us or help us out, and told us there definitely wouldn’t be a boat to malapasqua Island because of the weather. The room air was horrible, the bed was too soft and uncomfortable, and the shower window gave a clear view inside. Our room’s “windows” looked straight into another room, though luckily there were no other travellers. I’d definitely spend a bit more for somewhere better.

It’s a 5-minute walk from the port. The room costs 800 pesos a night, which feels a bit pricey for what you get.
