The breakfast was a real treat, and Valerie also shared memorable ideas for places to eat and visit. We’ve just finished a peaceful stay at Casa do Rio Vez, with lovely rooms and a garden beside the clean river. Valerie is a terrific host, attentive to every detail in both service and design. I’m already looking forward to coming back.

The house sits by an incredible river, and breakfast was easily the highlight. Our room was the only accommodation left: a large space with a kitchen, dining and lounge areas, plus a mezzanine bedroom. But the sleeping arrangements didn’t feel worth what we paid. The extra bed for a child was at the top of a two-metre drop and reached by ladder. The sheets were another letdown, they always smelled as if they’d been left damp in the washing machine for a week. I felt a bit cheated by the room. Even with those amazing breakfasts, €170 a night doesn’t feel justified. It struck me as a little greedy.

I only wish I’d booked a longer stay. The setting right by the river is magnificent, and the architecture is beautiful. I’d recommend it!
