Hotel Alto Lido

Plans changed at the last minute near the end of the year, but Christina and Theresa at reception found us a lovely room with a sea view. It’s not quite a five-star hotel, though it comes close, and it’s certainly a perfect four-star stay. The buffet had an exceptional selection, there were lots of amenities, and the staff were helpful. There was live music in the bar, and the poolside coffee martinis were superb. Parking costs extra, but the underground garage is excellent and worth it given Madeira traffic. My only small complaint was the empty minibar, though the rooms do have a telephone.

Hotel Alto Lido made for a very comfortable stay. The rooms are modern and clean, and the balconies have a nice ocean view. There’s plenty of space to relax around the well-designed pool, plus an indoor pool and spa. Restaurants, the promenade, and easy transport links are all nearby. It’s a stylish hotel and good value. I’d happily come back.

The hotel sits about halfway between central Funchal and the fishing village Câmara de Lobos. There’s a courtesy bus into Funchal, or you can take public bus number 1 to the village and walk back. The bedrooms are roomy and come with everything, including a kettle and fridge. There were always sun loungers free on the terrace. I didn’t try the outdoor pool, but used the indoor one once when the weather was poor. It was clean and in good condition. We went half board and enjoyed the range at breakfast and dinner. Even after two weeks we didn’t get bored, as the menu wasn’t repeated. I’d definitely return.

We used the hotel as our base for a week of exploring the island in spring 2025. It was clean, pleasant, and practical, with a very friendly and efficient staff. Breakfast was excellent, though the large dining room was always extremely busy.
