City's Hostel Ponta Delgada

The only decent thing was the coffee machine in the kitchen. The ventilation was terrible, it smelled like mold, and there was mold all over the bathroom and shower, with no exhaust fans. There were no locks for valuables. I was told they were being changed, but over six days of coming and going, none were replaced. I'd sooner sleep in my hammock and skip a shower than stay here again. Reply to Owner: I come from somewhere that's 100% humid almost all year. Some people try to prevent mold in those conditions, and then there's you.

We changed hotels after the first night. The place smelled strongly of mold, and the sheets were dirty. Mold and stains were on the pillows, and one towel had a really gross brown stain. It also felt extremely unsafe, with sketchy people inside, and the lock on our room was coming off the door. Worst place I've ever stayed.

We had a private room that was really clean and nice. The kitchen was disappointing, though. Every pan was burnt, there was only one chopping board and it belonged in the bin, and there were no knives for eating.

Breakfast was good and had plenty of variety, but it doesn't start until 8:30 a.m. The big plus is having a kitchen and somewhere to hang wet clothes. We stayed in a dorm; the room felt a bit too small, though the beds were fine. It has its own shared bathroom. Check-in is self-service, and there aren't staff around apart from the morning breakfast preparation.
