Gisela made us feel so welcome, and her tips for things to see and do around the island made the visit even more special. We loved our stay at Aldeia da Encosta in Velas, on beautiful São Jorge. The cozy house had everything we needed, including a stove, washing machine, and fridge, and its peaceful setting looked out across the ocean toward Pico.

The hosts are the real gems here. Gisella and her husband did everything they could to make us comfortable, and we’ll be back. Set high above the little city of Velas, the cottages have stunning views, lovely balconies, and yard furniture for enjoying the scenery at ground level. They’re airy, light-filled two-story homes, simply and tastefully furnished, with very comfortable beds in both bedrooms.
