Aston Villa Hotell

A good choice if you need to be near Sahlgrenska hospital, and the prices are very reasonable. Service was very nice, and breakfast was a decent classic Swedish spread. The rooms are old-fashioned but clean and well kept. There are also self-service snacks and frozen food on site. Recommended.

The bed was on the soft side, and the bathroom setup is unusual: there's no separate shower, the sink rotates and the shower is behind it, sharing the tap through a hole. I skipped that one and used the shower in the basement, where I also had a little sauna to myself. The building may be old, but the room was clean and nice, with good oak herringbone floors. Breakfast was basic but fine, with toast and bread, ham, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, muesli, yogurt, a few vegetables and fruit, plus tea, coffee, and juice. We were travelling by motorcycle and found safe parking at the hotel. Service was friendly and accommodating. It's next to the university hospital, and we saw a helicopter land a couple of times. The botanical garden is right nearby too, so I went for a walk there twice. We stayed two nights this weekend and really enjoyed it.

I booked online for a scientific conference in 2016, but when I arrived they offered me a dirty storage room in the basement instead of my room. Sanna said they'd given my room to another guest because there were so many people. One guest eventually left, and then I got that room. Horrible experience. I forgot to leave a review back then, but I'm glad Google reminded me now. The rooms were very old and uncomfortable, and breakfast was poor. They didn't even have a toaster to warm the bread. Don't go there.

What stood out positively was the very friendly, welcoming staff. The location, though, meant about 30 minutes to the central station, including a good 10-minute walk. It may have cost a bit less than other hotels, but at 110€ a night I don't think the room was worth it. A few bucks more could have got us something much better and closer to the centre. Our room was clean, but so tiny we could barely open a suitcase. The bed was too small for two to sleep comfortably, and its very soft mattress sagged in the middle. The bathroom was by far the worst part: everything looked at least 30 years old, and instead of a proper shower you rotate the sink to reveal a shower head behind it. The whole bathroom gets soaked when you use it. I've never seen that in a hotel room before. Breakfast was basic too: toast and bread, ham, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, some muesli, a few vegetables and fruit, and average filter coffee. This is a very basic hotel with a small room and a sub-standard bathroom. I'm not impressed and definitely won't return.
