There were several good places to eat nearby, plus a supermarket. I stayed during the Obstacle Course Racing World Champs, and the park and tram lines were both very close. Breakfast was tasty and good value, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The private room was in a different building across the street from the main hostel. I can't really speak to the social side since I stayed on my own in a private room. It’s a budget friendly choice, and might work well for a solo trip if you can put up with things feeling a bit dirty. My room had marks on the walls and a very old, thin mattress. We were expected to clean it ourselves, even vacuum the floor, which I’ve never had to do in the many hostels I’ve stayed at. That probably has something to do with why it didn’t feel very clean. The bathrooms didn’t seem to get cleaned often, and with no windows, the shower curtains smelled terrible and could really use replacing. I think the place could be cleaner.

I came by myself for two nights and ended up getting on really well with my roommates. They were friendly, quiet, and respectful, though your stay probably depends a lot on who you share with. My room was clean, and the showers and bathrooms were generally clean too. There are plenty to use. It’s about a 30-minute walk to the city centre. There were people spending time in the social area, and weekend activities were on, so meeting people seemed easy if you’re willing to put yourself out there. A man at reception, whose name I didn’t get, was really kind and talked with me for about 20 minutes when he learned I was from Scotland. I remember he had long white hair and a beard. I really enjoyed staying at Slottsskogens hostel and would come back if I’m in Gothenburg again.

The guests were pretty cool, and the staff were friendly. It was clean, with a large kitchen, and the free sauna was available from 4-7pm.

Really lovely staff and a great free sauna at this amazing hostel. One thing, though: why do some hostels expect guests to change their own beds? Surely they could get a cleaner to do it.
