Hotell Hjalmar

On 27.07.2024, a young man at the reception saved the day for me and my two friends. The luggage room at the train station was broken, and we only had a few hours to see the city, so we asked if the hotel could keep our bags. He kindly took them in, and we got to enjoy the beautiful city without dragging our luggage around. We’re now on our way to Oslo, and he’ll definitely stay in our good memories. As someone who works in a hotel, I know how much good service and kindness matter. I hope the hotel knows what a good employee they have. After two weeks of traveling around Sweden, we were heading back to Uppsala and spent one night in Örebro. I was with two old friends, revisiting a Europe trip we first took 50 years ago. We walked to a restaurant for dinner, then woke to a huge breakfast buffet with traditional Swedish food, plus scrambled eggs and pastries for me, the American. The room was spacious for three old men, with a big bathroom, and everything was spotless.

Breakfast was served in the hotel across the street. The food was good, but some things were missing. For an English breakfast, there was no suitable bread for toast or toaster, and although there were eggs and bacon, there were no baked beans. The place is clean, and the TV had several channels, but more than half showed a blank screen. There’s somewhere to hang clothes, though no wardrobe, and you can heat water for tea or coffee, but I’d have liked more tea choices. It’s an old hotel in a central spot, within walking distance of the railway station. It has the same owner as the hotel opposite on the same road, and at night that other hotel handles reception. For a budget tourist, it’s okay at three stars, but it needs an upgrade to be better.

The team at Hjalmar really made the experience. Marcus at reception, another male staff member, and the efficient women serving breakfast were all excellent. People matter, and they add a lot of value. My room was comfortable, quiet, and clean. Breakfast had a good range of hot and cold food. A supermarket, restaurants, a bar, the central station, and a bus stop were all between one and ten minutes away on foot. You should stay here.
