The candlelit breakfast may be the most memorable part of Hotel Skeppsholmen. In January, Stockholm gets very little winter sun, so eating by a warm, flickering glow felt magical. The spread of local and organic food was exceptional, the sort of thing that could make an Australian café jealous. I’d never had breakfast by candlelight before and loved it. In June, I might prefer breakfast on the terrace, but I wouldn’t complain either way. The hotel sits on its own small island, reached by a bridge, and makes a great base for central Stockholm. Most sights are an easy walk if you bring the right clothes for the cold. Crossing the bridge into the city was bracing and lovely, and returning to the warm lobby felt even better. A stop at the nearby Grand Hotel for a glass or two of Riesling helped with the chill. I’d booked a room without realizing I’d chosen a smaller one than I meant to. The staff kindly moved me to a larger room and handled it with effortless professionalism. The setting has a long history, too: the buildings called “The Long Row” were built in 1699-1702 from remnants of ruined castles around the Swedish countryside, originally as barracks for King Karl XII’s Royal Marines. The soldiers they were meant for never lived there. The premises later served as a plague hospice, naval offices, and apartments for naval families before becoming this distinctive hotel. A charming place, and one I’d gladly recommend.

The restaurant was very nice, but paying extra for a sea-view room and getting a view of a building was a letdown. When I mentioned it at reception, they said the view was “as expected.” We kept the curtains shut for the whole stay. We’ll choose somewhere else next time.

The room was small, but just right for me, and I slept really well in the comfortable bed. It was quiet, which I appreciated, and the Byredo bath products, welcome notes, chocolate mints, local items in the mini bar, and in-room safe were all thoughtful touches. The only thing that didn’t work well was the beautiful bathroom sink, which splashed water easily when I washed my face. That’s a minor flaw in an otherwise lovely stay. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the service was excellent. I loved the island setting, with its gardens and peaceful feel, while still being walkable to Stockholm’s sights. I was lucky with the weather and enjoyed opening the window to hear the birds. Breakfast was fabulous, with eggs, fruit, baked goods, and loose-leaf tea. I liked taking tea along on a walk around the island, and lunch on the covered patio was lovely too. I especially recommend the Swedish meatballs. I’d absolutely stay again.

This place has a quiet setting, modern charm, and a sophisticated feel without the mega-hotel atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally caring and helpful, and we loved our stay. I’d suggest booking a deluxe room and renting one of the bikes out front to explore the city. We’ll be back soon.

A friendly hotel with nice rooms, helpful staff, and a good breakfast. The National Museum is 12 minutes away, Grand Hotel is a 15-minute walk, and King's Gardens and Gamla Stan are each about 20 minutes away. Central Station is 30 minutes away, though Tram 65 makes the trip.
