Kastellet Bed & Breakfast

The soft bed and friendly people were the best parts. It’s quite hard to reach by vehicle, and you share the bathroom, so coming by ferry makes sense. Still, staying in the castle was a really memorable experience. It could be a good fit if your kids are into soldiers and warriors.

The castle and island are beautiful, and the views are refreshing. It’s a lovely spot for an overnight stay in Vaxholm. Breakfast could use vegan choices, and the rooms feel dated and could do with some renovation and better cleaning. Service also needs work: aside from the breakfast staff, the place was mostly unstaffed. A staffed reception would have made guests feel more welcome, especially if checking in during the evening, when you’re left on your own.

The room was spacious and cozy, with a comfortable bed, and the castle itself is authentic and beautiful. It’s in a fantastic location and has great facilities. The bathrooms were clean, though shared, which I found less desirable than having a private one. I understand that private bathrooms for every room might not be practical in a castle. Breakfast was disappointing: vegan options had been promised, but all I could eat was bread, jam, and tea.

Getting to the island by passenger ferry or water taxi is part of the experience. The B&B sits in one of the buildings of a well-preserved, very interesting castle on a small island near Vaxholm. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and has an authentic old-world feel and great views. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, though the toilets and showers are shared. Breakfast was fantastic, with freshly baked bread, and there’s lots to explore around the castle grounds and islands, including old military hardware.
