Rangoon Hostel

For just a night or two, this budget hotel can do the job. There’s no caretaker or room-cleaning arrangement, though, and it lacks buckets, mugs, bidets, and similar things some Indian travelers may expect.

The bathroom had someone else’s blood in it, which really wasn’t what I wanted. The bedroom itself was clean, with plenty of storage, and the air conditioning kept it cool. A drinks machine downstairs helped make up for there being no breakfast. It’s very cheap for Singapore and well placed for walking into the city, but I wish the bathroom had been blood-free.

Check-in and checkout were both easy. It’s a pretty standard hostel setup: simple bedding, a shower, body wash, shampoo, and 5G WiFi. There’s also a washer and dryer on the first floor, available in the morning.

This works for a night or two if you mainly need a bed. It’s near a coffee shop and other amenities, and the air conditioning works fine. Self check-in and checkout are done by following the instructions on the wall. There’s no one around to help, but the lobby has free WiFi so you can contact the owner by WhatsApp or email. The WiFi is poor, and the staff speak only Malay, not English. Early check-in or checkout costs $5 an hour. You need a manual key to lock and unlock the room door; the access card only turns on the electricity. The wallpaper is moldy, and there’s no TV, phone, window, or toothbrush.
