Grand Central Apartment

I can’t recommend this apartment. We were returning from a vacation in Croatia and needed a night’s stay for three families with children. At about 21.30, we checked in at Pension Petit, where registration is handled, about 400 meters from the Grand Central Apartment. We paid for the room and parking, another 12 euros for the car. The parking is about 100 meters from Petit and 500 meters from the apartment. The entrance was hard to find and led through a dark, unlit courtyard. We got inside and put the children to bed, then someone started pounding and shouting at the door. We heard several male voices demanding Euro and saying they’d leave if we gave them money. We called reception and learned there was no security at the apartment, and that we should call the police. I spent half an hour on the phone with someone at 112. He seemed amused by my story and the sound of crying children in the background. We were in the attic, with all the windows facing the roof, so we couldn’t tell whether police or the people trying to get in were outside. There was no glass in the door either. The 112 operator couldn’t confirm that the people outside were actually police. He seemed to think I didn’t understand Slovakian and said, "I think the woman watched to many American movie so she is afraid to open door". After an hour trapped inside, afraid to leave in case someone was waiting outside, we called the police again. A patrol finally arrived. When they found out we were Poles, they laughed at the situation and asked why we hadn’t just given the burglars the money so they would leave. We asked them to escort us to the hotel station because we’d been promised another place to stay, but they didn’t help and criticized us for calling. In the middle of the night, we had to run away to Petite. The apartment staff were not helpful, and everyone we dealt with was prejudiced against Poles.
