My small room was comfortable, but it got quite noisy. There was no air-conditioning, so I had to keep the balcony door open, which let in all the downtown street noise.

The rooms were large and clean, if a little basic. The hotel is right in the old town, with bars and restaurants within walking distance. As for the décor, if you like the late 70s and early 80s look but can’t afford time travel, this is your place. It’s easy to imagine The Communist Party of Slovakia holding its annual conference here back in the day.

The breakfast was the worst I’ve ever tried. The place has an old East Bloc feel, charming in one way and completely hopeless in another. Does anyone here know the wall came down?

I had a very bad overnight stay. The WiFi was terrible, and without window shutters the early morning sun came straight into my eyes. When I asked the girl at reception with the glasses to arrange a taxi, she handed me a card for a driver who didn’t speak English. I couldn’t communicate with him, so I went back expecting her to speak to them. She gave me a different card, but that taxi contact didn’t speak English either. She didn’t help me at all and seemed bored.

The restaurant had a great range of food, and there’s even a casino in the building. Parking felt very secure and had an attendant. We stayed for the New Year’s festivities, and the rooms were surprisingly spacious and immaculately clean. The staff did everything they could to make it one of our best stays in Slovakia.
