Sweet Guest House

The room was comfortable and clean, with air conditioning, and I liked the shared spaces. Reception service varied, though the receptionists were great, especially Gerilson, who was excellent with us. The breakfast chefs, on the other hand, seemed bothered when we spoke to them. My main issue was the extra charges. Breakfast costs 10€ per person for a basic continental meal, while nearby cafes serve tasty local food for 2-3€ total. A late checkout fee is understandable, but charging another 7€ to use the common areas after checkout felt unfair after paying a fairly high room rate. The hotel also bills 10€ per person for a taxi, which seems inflated to me, and I wondered if the hotel keeps a cut. I’m unsure I’d book again and would look at other places in town.

A well-known pension with the feel of a youth hostel. You can choose a shared or private room, and there’s a public kitchen and sofa area. Seems like a nice base for beginning a visit to São Tomé.

The second-floor shared areas are a lovely touch, with books, chess and draughts, and those cute carved ash trays. The guesthouse itself is clean and homely, with stylish wooden details. Bemilton and Abdel were fantastic, always cheerful and helpful. It costs more than a budget hotel, but I felt it was worth it. The center, cafes and supermarket are about a 10-minute walk away. I’ll be back to São Tomé, and to this sweet spot.

The terrace upstairs is a great place to unwind, and the bed was comfortable. The guesthouse was very clean, and the staff were friendly and so helpful. I’d definitely recommend staying here in Sao Tome.
