Laithong Hotel Ubon Ratchathani

Breakfast included local dishes, and the room was clean with a classic look. The hotel is right in central Ubon, not far from the airport, with plenty of good restaurants nearby.

The location is good, but the hotel felt stuck in the 70s and badly run down. The facilities weren't good, and it was far too expensive for what you got. Breakfast was grim and the bar was shut. We’re cycling across Asia and are used to basic places. Even though the hotel was empty, they wouldn't let us check in early. We'd sent several messages in the days before we arrived.

They made the Thai breakfast to order, just how we wanted it. We were the only guests that night and the only ones at breakfast. It's an old hotel, but clean, including the carpeted hallways, which smelled fresh too.

The pool was small and the water was clean, but the area was marked for smoking, with cigarette butts and a dead pigeon around. Some of the surrounding areas were damaged, and there was something like a rubbish dump nearby. The lobby had two pianos, but when I tried to play one with my partner, I was told not to. They covered it right away, and my partner said we were supposed to ask the hotel first. We had to move from the seventh floor to the fourth because the WiFi on the seventh was poor. The receptionist who had stopped me playing the piano wasn't very gracious when I asked. There was no tea or coffee setup in the room, so during one of my sleepless spells I got hot water from reception and made tea with my own tea bags. Mosquitoes bit my feet the first night. I wore socks the next night, and they bit my legs instead. I booked directly by phone and was quoted over 2,500 baht for two nights. On Agoda I booked a twin room for 2,160 baht, payable on arrival. When I got there, my partner was waiting, but she hadn't been allowed into the room. After I paid, we went in and found it very clean. The buffet breakfast both mornings wasn't great. There was no tea, the food wasn't hot, and the orange juice was overly sweet as usual. The fried eggs stuck to a small silver cooking plate and had to be scraped off. The hotel is near Ubon Ratchatani Airport, which seems like a good location, but I think they charge too much. Service and facilities need improvement.
