Odyssey Guest House

We called at 10 pm needing a room for three, and the owner was happy to help. We got there at 1 am and he was still waiting to greet us and show us where everything was. It’s a cozy guest house in a historic building, in a great location.

The hosts, a couple, were excellent and made us a wonderful breakfast. We also loved the terrace view and the guest house’s common areas. This charming old family home is right in downtown Bergama and has been divided into about six rooms. The decor has character, and the rooms are comfortable, though they feel dated. Parking takes some planning. The lane is very narrow, so it’s not a good place to leave a car. We parked near the basilica on the main street, about 300 meters downhill. Our room also had just two electrical outlets. They provided multi-plug extensions, but it still wasn’t especially convenient. We’d definitely stay again.

The roof terrace is the standout, with a gorgeous view from under the well-kept grape vines. You’ll need to sort out your own breakfast, but there’s a shared kitchen and several shops nearby, so there are plenty of options. The man who runs the place is incredibly friendly and helpful. There’s a well-stocked book exchange downstairs and guidebooks for the area in many languages upstairs. We also found a copy of Homer’s Odyssey in our room, a nice touch.

From the street, you’d never guess how beautiful this house is. Step inside and it feels like a whole different world. Everything was just perfect, and I’d definitely come back when I’m in town again. You won’t regret staying here!
