Abaci Konak Hotel - Special Class

The smoke was the biggest problem for us. We woke up to cigarette smell at night, and I think it was coming from people smoking in the restrooms, both at the hotel and among other guests. It filled our room. My wife has asthma, so we couldn't sleep at all. The internet barely worked, and there was no sound insulation, so outside noise came straight into the room. We told reception about these issues. They apologized and offered to move us, which we did, but similar problems carried on in the next room. We stayed for 10 days at the end of last January. The room we started in was also missing one shower door, so the bathroom got soaked every time we showered. At least the cleaning was good. Staff knocked each day to ask if we needed anything, and our room was clean and tidy when we came back. The location was excellent too, right in the middle of Odunpazarı, so we could walk everywhere. But besides cleanliness and location, we weren't very satisfied. For the price, I wouldn't choose it again.

The hotel has a cozy feel, with several buildings in the old town, a little bar, and spots to sit and relax. It's also just a one-minute walk from the city museums. The mattress and pillows were new and very comfortable. Still, our stay was spoiled by a lot of problems. We both needed to work, but the Wi-Fi only opened for my husband's document number. Mine apparently hadn't been entered at check-in, so we had to take turns working. There was no working room phone to reach reception. You had to call the hotel from your mobile or go to another building. Calls could be difficult too, since not all employees spoke English, and the ones who did sometimes hung up and rejected the calls. The bathroom supplies were just a small soap and some gel by the sink, enough for about four hand washes. The shower dispenser was empty. Before work, I tried to use the last drop of gel to wash my hair, then spent ages trying to reach an English-speaking employee for more gel or shampoo. When I finally got through, I waited 20 minutes with wet hair, had to call again, and only then got shampoo. There wasn't time for breakfast after all that. Also, ask for a room facing the courtyard. We were on the street side and couldn't sleep because of car and motorbike horns. The old windows are charming, but they let in all the noise. I hope we were just unlucky, because the hotel really is cozy. For a good night's sleep, hotels near the river might be a better choice, since there are almost no cars there.

We got there and found the hotel locked up. They'd sealed it. Since I booked through Hotels.com, I got my money back right away. A direct booking would have meant losing it. Thanks to Hotels.com for the quick refund. This is unacceptable, Midas! Don't stay here, and don't send anyone else here either.

We had to switch rooms three times after checking in. The toilet in the first one had a major leak and left the bathroom soaked. Room two was missing a shower door. In the last room, the toilet wobbled and the shower curtain was hard to close. The hairdryer kept cutting out. We also reported stained sheets to reception twice. Some were changed, but one dirty sheet was left on the sofa in our room. That's pure negligence. The breakfast was another disappointment. We were initially told the hotel served a buffet, but it didn't. They said weekdays only had a continental breakfast. At check-in, we were told breakfast ran until 11 am, but when we arrived we learned the weekday cutoff was 10. This place costs almost twice as much as other hotels in Odunpazarı and absolutely isn't worth that. Don't be fooled by how it looks.
