The story behind FC Hostel was a highlight for me. The owner told me it began 11 years ago in his family home, and that he was born in the very room that’s now part of the hostel. He built the wooden ladders himself and clearly loves the work and meeting people from around the world. He speaks great English, too. It’s right by Ruifang Train Station, the bus stop for Jiufen, and the Ruifang food court, with plenty of things to reach on foot. Booking communication from the owner and his friend was excellent, and getting in with the entry code was easy. At 300 TWD, it was the cheapest hostel I stayed in in Taiwan, cheaper than the places I tried in Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan. The beds are basic and the blanket thin, but the room stayed cool enough to sleep comfortably with the fans running. The bathroom setup, with two toilets and a separate shower room, worked well. It felt like a place with a story and a lot of heart.

The upper bunk’s pigeonhole setup offers no privacy. The pillow was flat, and the pillowcase, mattress covers, and blanket smelled bad. The toilet cubicle was cramped, with hardly any room for your legs, and there was only one central air conditioner.

It’s easy to get around from here, since the hostel is close to Ruifang station and convenient for visiting Jiufen and the rural parts of the Pingxi line. There are also several good places to eat nearby, the kind that serve locals rather than tourists. The owner speaks perfect English, and the hostel is comfortable, with a very clean toilet. He’s friendly, too.

I thought the price was good, and the hostel was clean. The bed boxes were a nice touch for a bit more privacy, and I appreciated the breakfast coupon. It took 40$ off, so I got dumplings for 30 instead of 70. The welcome felt a little odd: I came in and was asked from the staircase whether I had questions, rather than being greeted and asked if I had a booking. The service was just okay for me, though not bad. For the low price, it was still a decent stay.

The dorm was clean and affordable, though it’ll probably be more comfortable if you’re Asian sized. The host was really nice and spoke fluent English. They have music nights on Fridays and Saturdays if you want to relax and meet people. It’s a quiet area since it’s some distance from the center, but Jiufen, Shifen, Leekung, and Houtong are nearby.
