The Tango Taipei Nanshi

The hotel is pretty dark, and we ended up in a room without a window. The bathroom could use more hooks. On the plus side, there are two TVs, one of them in the bathroom, if that’s something you need to know. The location is excellent, with plenty of places to eat and shop around, and staff accommodated our requests for a slightly early check-in and slightly late check-out.

I chose this hotel for its location by Zhongshan MRT. Exit 3 is just a one-minute walk away. The room was roomy enough, with a big bed, comfortable bedding, and an extra glass sliding door that helped block noise. The mini fridge sits behind a cabinet door, so it stays quiet, and there are blackout curtains. Housekeeping cleaned and changed the towels daily, which was nice to come back to. A few things kept this from being five stars. The room needed better vacuuming: there was dust above the closet hangers, on the water bottles, and along the carpet edges. A bright green EXIT sign over the door stayed lit all night. The curtains left a gap that let in morning light. There were no toiletries apart from hand soap, such as a toothbrush or toothpaste. I’m not sure if that’s a Taiwan thing or if the hotel had them for pickup at reception, but no one mentioned it at check-in. I had brought my own, so didn’t ask. You can borrow an umbrella from the front desk for the day.

Zhongshan station is right below the hotel, so it’s easy to reach. Beyond that convenient location, I didn’t find much to praise. There was still dust on surfaces, and the room cleanliness could have been better. The hotel doesn’t supply disposable items like toothpaste or toothbrushes, which is inconvenient for international travelers without checked luggage. Staff also seemed glum and weren’t especially friendly or helpful. No one greeted us coming or going, which wasn’t what I expected from a supposed four-star hotel.

The room itself was good, and the location is hard to beat. Still, I’d rather try another nearby hotel next time. Check-in starts at 4pm, later than the usual 3pm elsewhere, and checkout is 11am. They called at 10:30am to remind me, which I found annoying. Cleaning staff also entered without warning. After I turned them away, someone called to ask whether I wanted cleaning. I’d have been in a foul mood if I’d been trying to nap.
