Lake Natron Tented Camp

We had great WhatsApp contact with Roos, who helped us a lot, though there was some confusion about whether we could pay the guide and guard by cash or credit card. We eventually sorted it out with M-Pesa. Bring plenty of cash if you’re visiting in low season. The campsite has what you need, but it’s very basic. We were the only guests when we arrived. The shower was cold, which was fine in the heat, but the cabin was quite filthy. There were also quite a few Masai people around who said they’d been in touch with the manager about our mountain hike plans, or kept pushing us to hire them as guides. Getting there takes about 3 hours from Mto wa Mbu. The road is sandy and very bumpy, so make sure you have a very good car. At Lake Natron NP, you have to pay fees to both the General Government and local authorities, which felt like double payment.

A solid option for a short stop while travelling through the area. The lake viewpoints and the waterfall, two of the main attractions, are nearby. One thing to know: unlike higher-elevation places, we did get some mosquitoes here. It wasn’t awful, but there were enough in the evening that we needed long sleeves and spray.

The place is beautiful, and with a local guide you can visit the falls and see the lake at sunrise. It’s a friendly spot run by the Masai village, with good food and cozy tents. We did have some trouble with the hot water in the showers. The main downside was being constantly surrounded by Masai women and children trying to sell bracelets.

The Restaurant Manager was very kind and understood what the customer needed. Excellent location and good food!
