I don't think this place deserves its current rating. My impression is that guests who leave early and get refunds often don't leave reviews, which may be why the score seems misleadingly high. I can't recommend it to anyone looking for a safe, comfortable stay, and I'm sure we weren't the first guests asked to leave. The first evening, we had no electricity all night. The host said it wasn't their fault, but the power returned the next day after we said the situation was unacceptable. We also reported a faulty socket. The hosts said previous guests might have broken it and that they'd check, then claimed it was fine and that we didn't know how to use it. The shower had extremely weak flow even though the sink worked. We were told it was due to the island's infrastructure and offered a garden bucket to wash our hair with. The next day the water flow was much better, another odd coincidence. On the second night we found cockroaches in our room. When we mentioned them at breakfast, we were told to “just spray them” because it was “normal on the island.” After we showed a photo, the host got irritated, called us “problematic,” and asked us to leave within two hours. Crows often came into the kitchen where breakfast was prepared. The host was friendly when we didn't raise problems. When we did, we were blamed personally, told we were inexperienced, or told a previous guest had caused the issue. At night, the same dogs that were friendly during the day barked or growled aggressively at guests coming back. The hosts said they were “just saying hello,” but it didn't feel safe. I expect the host will probably respond with excuses or personal comments, but please don't be misled. I'm sharing this to help future guests.

Colin and Lesley were so welcoming and accommodating that it felt like staying in a family home. Their warmth and hospitality are what set Game Fish Lodge apart. There's an honesty bar, and they let us bring our own drinks and keep them in their fridges. They were also accommodating when we needed to pay cash on the day. The lodge is well placed just outside the busy area, but close enough to get around and see everything easily. The rooms are dated, but clean and functional, with a bar fridge, kettle and working air conditioning in each. Coffee and similar items either need to be brought up from the eating area or bought yourself. They can cook dinner if you let them know in the morning. Crayfish is apparently available too, but needs a few days' notice. Good value for money.

The power cuts were a serious problem during our stay: on one day out of every three, we had no electricity for 24 hours. The dogs were gentle in the daytime, but became very aggressive at night, so be careful around them. The owner seemed kind at first, but that changed quickly. His mood swung from high to low, and he accused me of understanding nothing and told me to leave. His aggression made me feel unsafe. Future travelers, please book somewhere else.

The best part of our stay at Game Fish Lodge was the time we spent talking with Lesley and Colin over their generous meals. They were always ready to offer advice on making the most of Zanzibar, which was especially helpful for a tourist trying to avoid wasting time or getting scammed. We'd hoped for a quiet, quality stay in Nungwi, and the lodge looked promising. The warm hosts and excellent location turned out to be even better than expected. We had a wonderful stay and really missed that level of service at our next place on the island. Highly recommended!

The beach and ocean view made this a lovely place to relax in peace, with a breeze and sun. It's a quiet, private hotel without loud music, beach scammers, or waiters constantly around. The rooms were clean and tidy, and staying here felt a bit like visiting family or friends. Lisely and Collin have been here for 20 years, and they helped us understand fair prices for taxis, motorbikes, tuktuks, fruit, local restaurants, safaris, and activities. They also gave us a beautiful sea-view suite when they learned we were on our honeymoon. Hillaly helped too, and the couple's hospitality was genuinely heartwarming. Breakfast came in a large portion, with a sweet starter, a savory meal, juice, and whatever hot drink you liked. There are two dogs. I'm afraid of dogs, but these were friendly and didn't hurt anyone, so just be prepared to see them.
