At night, mice came out. The room had no curtains, and the floor hadn’t been swept. During our two weeks there, the garbage was taken out only three times. We noticed the shower was leaking when we entered the room. We called a plumber twice, but it was only repaired on the second visit.

The room had no Wi-Fi, and construction under the window made it noisy. There were dusty bars, no bedside lights, and no gel, shampoo, or towels. We also had no hot water or hairdryer. The refrigerator had no nearby outlet, so it had to be plugged in with an extension cord. In the evening, the only staff member around was an unfriendly security guard.

Breakfast was set out at 8, and by 8:30 the omelet and porridge were cold, with tea made using cold water. The room itself was poorly cleaned: the bathroom had been wiped with a dirty rag that left swamp-colored marks on the light tiles. There was no shower gel or shampoo. The freshly renovated room had also been spoiled by its decor. We were on the first floor. In the evening, only the security guard was around. He wasn’t keen to help find a hairdryer, but did call to check. There was just one, and it had burned out. When we tried to shower, there was no hot water. The guard went to the boiler room to try to fix it, but nothing worked, and they suggested we wash in the morning. Eventually they opened a local bathhouse, a real “horror from the 90s,” where at least there was hot water. But we couldn’t dry off there either, since the hairdryer overheated after 30 seconds and shut off.
