Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel

The hotel has a pleasant feel, a nice location and was busy. The rooms were spacious, clean and modern, and the prices seemed reasonable for this style of place. The fine-dining food looked and tasted like fine dining, but mine was a bit dry and didn’t meet that standard for quality. It was a pleasant visit overall, though the food let it down a little.

The Stables Suite was a real lesson in modern luxury. The freestanding bath was a treat, but the hot tub on our private balcony was the highlight. Marshall Meadows Manor House made for a flawless stay. Driving up the sweeping driveway, I felt the weight of the world lift. It’s a lovely mix of a stately home and chic contemporary luxury. The recent renovations are beautifully done, with sophisticated, plush interiors that still leave the house’s original character intact. The team were attentive and professional without being stuffy, and made us feel like guests in a private home. Dramatic Northumberland coast nearby, peaceful manicured gardens around the house, it’s a poetic setting. A gem for a romantic break or a quiet base to explore the coast. We felt completely pampered and are already checking dates to return. If you enjoy the finer things, book it.

Dinner was expensive, but remarkably high quality and without equal. Both the main course and dessert deserve full marks, and I’d recommend it to anyone after a fine meal. The room was spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed, a dual shower with clear controls and hot water, friendly attentive staff, working lights and decent toilet paper. My only complaint was that the bathroom door in room 9 locked itself overnight. Apparently it has happened before, and a loose screw on the fitting may have caused it. Access from the A1 is easy, and the road is far enough away not to be noisy. But, like many similar junctions, crossing from the south can be dangerous.

It was our second visit, and it exceeded expectations again. James the GM clearly sets a high bar for recruiting and training. The team seemed genuinely happy, guest-focused and pulling together, and every staff member gave us a warm welcome during our four-day stay. Housekeeping was excellent, and the public rooms were clean, comfortable and relaxing, with pleasing decor. There are great walks from the hotel, including to Berwick, or it’s a five-minute drive. The spectacular North Sea coast is close by, and the Scottish border and A1 are only a few hundred metres away, though neither can be seen or heard. Toby the head chef and his deputy Callum deserve applause for the quality and presentation of every dinner course. Michelin Plate standard, in my experience. Thank you, everyone.
