The room's basic safety and upkeep were worrying. In both rooms the inside thumb lock was broken, and I had to fix the window in my upgraded room because it wouldn't shut. The upgrade wasn't much of an improvement anyway. Floors creaked throughout the rooms and stairs, and the lift took longer than walking up. Everything feels neglected: worn carpets and furniture, dated decor, broken tiles, a tiny old TV that won't take a Fire Stick, and a bouncy, uncomfortable spring mattress. The shower barely had any flow. It might have been a wonderful hotel in the 1980s, but it hasn't had the maintenance it needs since. It needs a full refurbishment, right down to stripping the room walls back to brick. I felt for the staff, who were doing their best, though there was no duty manager on Bank Holiday Monday. Breakfast wasn't great. The cooked option was made to order, and the coffee was very good. Avoid. You have been warned.

The staff made this a really enjoyable four-night stay. Reception were excellent, and the lady in the bar was friendly, pleasant, and worked hard. The food was very good, even while catering for 100 people, and the Elvis tribute weekend entertainment was first class. That's down to the organisers who use the hotel for events, including Yesterday Once More. We were in room 131. It was adequate, though a bit dark, with a not-so-great view over the car park between the buildings. One note for taller guests: ask for a king-size bed to suit your height. We had a great time.

The food was poor, and my coeliac disease wasn't taken seriously despite telling the hotel in advance about my gluten intolerance. No one made an effort to show me what was safe or offer gluten-free choices. On the third day I asked the manager for gluten-free bread for toast. He said he wouldn't buy it only to throw it away after it went out of date. I bought my own loaf with 10 slices, enough for my six-day stay. When I asked for pork with gluten-free gravy, a waiter did find me a watery option. The prawns in the cocktail had been over-defrosted in a microwave and were inedible. The waiting staff did their best. The reception area was grubby, and its chairs and covers needed a good clean. My room was a bit tired too, with chipped paint that needed refreshing. On the plus side, the shower was hot and the bedding clean. Would I return? Definitely NO.

We had the roasts in a romantic booth, and they were good value, with a pudding included. The waitress was great, helping us decide and offering useful advice. The bar was busy and had a good atmosphere. Reception were really friendly and helpful too, and booked us a taxi for the morning. A good place to stay 😎👍

We had a very nice Christmas holiday. The food was excellent, our room was very good, and the staff were helpful. There wasn't enough entertainment, though. The dining room was huge but really cold, and the room heating was poor during the day. With a lot of elderly pensioners staying there, it should have been much better.
