Friday evening was lively without feeling packed, and the little tucked-away areas made it easy for our group to talk. There were seven of us, and the wine drinkers were particularly impressed with the Rioja. The pub has plenty of character and draws both locals and visitors. Staff were super friendly, with a broad choice of spirits, beer and wine. Our local hosts and their friends come here often, and we can see why. Well worth a visit.

The food is what really stands out here. I travel a fair bit, especially for food, and would put this among the best pub meals I’ve had in the UK. It even gives Australian pub food a run for its money. The ribs, lamb shanks and fillet steak were all 10/10. We stopped in for lunch several times over the hectic Christmas and New Year period, and each time the staff were friendly, accommodating and excellent, however busy it got.
My wife needed oat milk for a hot chocolate, and although the bar manager wasn’t sure they had any, they managed to find some. She loved it. We’d come in for a midweek lunch in December, when it was busy, but the manager found us a table in the restaurant straight away. The menu had a good range. I had Welsh beef and ale pie, while my wife chose faggots and peas. Both seemed homemade and were delicious. My Timothy Taylor pint was excellent too. Everyone was friendly and efficient, and the service was quick and professional. We’ll definitely come back.
The salt and pepper squid and Welsh lamb faggots with onion gravy were especially yummy. We had a delicious meal at The Bear, with everything seasoned just right and served hot. Portions were just the right size, and there was a sensible gap between courses. The menu offers plenty of variety, plus daily specials. Friendly staff and excellent service. I’d highly recommend it.
The food has been delicious every time we’ve visited The Bear Hotel for lunch, and the menu has a nice range of choices. It does cost more than a pub meal, but the quality makes it feel worth paying for. There’s a cosy atmosphere and a friendly welcome each time. We’d definitely recommend stopping by.
