About this property

Wotton House: Aside from the extraordinary gardens, our house too has its own unexpected story to tell. We were home to the Canadian Army during the Second World War and in 1947 it became a fire training centre for The Home Office. Soon afterwards, the house became the national Fire Service College. Today, our house is a home from home; a place where you will create unforgettable memories that will stay with you long after you leave. We are proud of our rich history, which makes us so unique. The Estate dates back to the 16th Century, when it was sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family. John Evelyn, one of three sons of Richard Evelyn, was passionate about botanicals and arboriculture and was particularly spellbound by the Italian Renaissance gardens he had seen on his tour of Italy. Inspired by what he had discovered on his travels, on his return to Wotton he constructed an Italian garden and temple, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, which was soon joined by a parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain. The Gardens As you wander through our 13 acres of garden, you'll discover corners of English eccentricity that have become synonymous with the Wotton Estate. Ours was the first Italian garden in England, completed in 1652, adorned with Roman temples and original mosaics. The gardens have been deemed worthy of protection and are unusually, individually Grade II listed. Built for intrigue, discover their mystical nature that is fit for any romantic explorer.

Our stay was awful from the cold, filthy room to the failed follow-up, and I'm still trying to resolve it. The room had dirt on the walls, mould in the bathroom and around the window frames, and loose carpet edging that hurt when it caught our feet. We were shown three rooms, and every bed squeaked whenever we moved. The pool looked dirty and dated, so we didn't even try it. At dinner my husband's supposed fillet steak was cold, fatty and definitely not fillet; other guests also complained that their food was cold. My chicken Caesar salad was just as bad: the chicken seemed artificial and compressed, the lettuce was halved rather than chopped, and there was no dressing. We sent it back, but by then it was so late we returned to the room without dinner. The night brought more squeaky bed, freezing room, generators switching on and off, and shouting in the halls at 6.30am. We got no dinner and no sleep. At checkout on Saturday morning I asked for a manager and was told no one would be in until 10.00am. We waited until 10.25am, when the reception manager offered 50% back. I refused because everything had been awful, and was told the duty manager would need to speak to me when back on Tuesday. A week passed with no call, only a message from the booking company saying they were processing the same 50% refund I'd refused. I tried the hotel by phone and email throughout the week and got no response. When I finally reached them a week after our stay, I was told again the manager wouldn't be in until Monday. I wasn't the only guest at checkout waiting to complain to a manager about an unacceptable stay. In Feb 2026, after my review, the hotel manager called and said the chicken in the Caesar salad wasn't processed, that it was just presented that way. With that information, I agreed to edit my review.

The grounds are impressive, especially the entrance drive, and they left a bottle of prosecco in the room as a nice birthday welcome. We booked one premium room and one standard room for a significant birthday overnight stay. Both rooms were clean and modern, though the premium one didn't feel worth the higher price. The spa and pool were a letdown: tiny, overcrowded and in need of refurbishment, so we took one look and turned back. The gym seemed alright. Breakfast was disappointing, with too many guests and too few staff or buffet items. Things had run out and guests were left waiting.

Jose in the restaurant gave amazing service and made my boyfriend’s birthday feel extra special. All the staff were lovely and went above and beyond. It was our first visit to Wotton House Hotel, and we stayed in a gorgeous, spacious suite. The hotel is stunning, the food was great, and the thoughtful touches made the whole stay feel special. We'll definitely be back, highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The grounds are beautiful, and we were thoughtfully given wellington boots to wander around in, plus sticks to throw for our dog. I'd go back 👍🏽 The rooms are spacious, with heritage-style decor, soft yellow lighting and a comfortable bed. We ordered room service and the food was fine. Breakfast gets very busy in the dining area, and we had to wait for the buffet to be replenished. The swimming pool and hot tub are small, and there are no treatment rooms.
