Port Hotel

The hotel is clean and peaceful, with plenty of character. It’s a small, quirky place with a calm, modern feel, and the bar has a good range of drinks, including local ales worth trying. David made the visit memorable from the start. He greeted me warmly, explained things clearly and suggested places to eat and things to see nearby. He was friendly and attentive without hovering, and his knowledge and enthusiasm never felt overwhelming. The service was among the best I’ve had, and he’s a real credit to The Port Hotel. I felt at home throughout my stay. I’d gladly recommend the hotel to anyone looking for somewhere charming, and I’ll happily return. It’s hard for me to see how negative reviews match the welcoming, comfortable experience I had.

Please avoid this hotel. I made the booking by mistake and tried to cancel straight away, though I had to wait for the phone lines to open. Booking.com was willing to refund me, but deputy manager Bradley was extremely rude. He called a refund a “poor business decision” and spoke down to us. I felt they were taking the money greedily when the matter could have been sorted out easily. I’ll tell my friends and family to stay away and make sure nobody I know books here.

I was only there overnight for work, but had a really good stay. The room was comfortable, breakfast was tasty, and Teardrop by Massive Attack was playing. Check-in was easy and the staff were helpful. I’d come back.

The room was clean and comfortable, with nice decor, a great shower and toiletries. But breakfast the next morning was a very disappointing experience. My husband and I came down around 8.30, were greeted by the receptionist, sat ourselves down as the only guests there and ordered. While we waited, the manager went into the kitchen and shouted very loudly at a staff member, who we gathered was the chef and had arrived late. The language was awful and we were mortified. There’s a time and place to tell staff off, and it shouldn’t be within guests’ earshot. To make it worse, nobody apologised.
