I liked how easy it was to get around from Murrayfield Guest House, with public transport nearby and Murrayfield Stadium close enough to walk to. My room was comfortable and cleanish, with what I needed for a short visit. Check-in felt impersonal, though, and I arrived at 1pm, the stated check-in time, only to be told the room wasn't ready. There was some street noise, and the room could use an update. It's decent value, if a little expensive for what's on offer. Probably best for a solo trip of one or two nights. Comfortable and convenient, just not quite a four-star stay.

The bus stop nearby was about 20 minutes from the city centre, and the location was the one real positive. It couldn't make up for the stay, though. We'd expected rough budget accommodation, but not conditions this bad. Check-in was a mess from the start. We'd asked the owners by email how to get in for our late, around-8pm self check-in, but got no reply or instructions through booking.com. At the entrance there were two phone numbers taped up. Neither connected when we called, so we tried WhatsApp and eventually got the door code. The owner told us to find our key in a bowl on a table in the hall. After a full day of travel, this was stressful and avoidable. The room was dirty: stained sheets, mould on the shower and taps, dusty surfaces, and a carpet that looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in ages. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows flat, and the hair-dryer would stop working while in use. Walls were very thin, and there were no small hair towels. We hadn't expected a mini-fridge in a budget room, though one would have been useful. We'd booked a double room with a private toilet and shared bathroom. The toilet was blocked when we arrived and had almost no water pressure. The shared bathroom had broken tiles, no shower mat, and an old folding shower door that got stuck every time. With all the water on the floor, those broken tiles made it a safety hazard. There was also a curtain that left part of the window exposed. More worrying, nobody told us cleaners would enter the room, and there were no staff around to ask. We only found out after returning from a day out to a freshly made bed. Our suitcases had been left unlocked with our belongings visible, so a stranger could have accessed them. Nothing seemed touched or missing, but we should have been told so we could prepare. We had a good bus connection, but that was nowhere near enough to redeem the experience. Edinburgh and Scotland are beautiful and well worth seeing, but I'd tell people to stay somewhere else.

The bus stop is only a 3-4 minute walk away, but it's quiet around there at night, so get back to your room early. I visited in December and it gets dark quickly. Stay safe. The city centre is 20-30 minutes away by bus, which felt a bit far. The entrance password wasn't given to me by the lady, and I nearly got stuck outside. Inside, the room door uses an old-fashioned key. Every time I used it, I worried I'd lock my things inside or break the key trying to open it. The toilet is outside the room, so I had to lock my door each time I went. There's a sink in the room, and you can hear the pipes when someone uses water, as well as people running in the corridor. I couldn't get the hotel WiFi in my room either, so I ended up using mobile data. If you're not as broke as I am, don't stay here.

We prepaid for four nights, but the place never let us in. On November 25th, 2025, we arrived at 13.20, within the stated check-in hours of 13.00-17.30. The door was locked and nobody was there. A note gave two numbers and said to call for an access code. Both went to voicemail saying the caller was unavailable and asking us to leave a message. We did, but nobody called back. We waited outside for 1.30 hrs, called repeatedly, and knocked several times. The doorbell didn't work, and nobody nearby knew what was happening. Through a window on the left-hand side of the building, we could see a NO VACANCIES sign. Inside were stacked beds and dirty, dusty sheets that looked as if they'd been left there for days. We eventually had to leave and book a nearby room. During our time in Edinburgh, we went back to Murrayfield Guest house daily and called several times, but got no response at all. They took payment without providing any service. This is unacceptable. Booking.com should not list this place. We're considering legal action.

We were left outside in the cold wind for a long time because there was no staff at the hotel. We could only get in when someone eventually came out. Then we were told that another person had already checked into the room I'd booked for two nights. It was close to midnight, and we had no choice but to find another expensive hotel. My mom is nearly 65, and we still had to haul a heavy suitcase to the new place. We got a refund a few days later, but Agoda had promised 10% compensation and then went back on that. They called the hotel to check, and the staff said we'd decided at the last minute not to stay. I've never had such a ridiculous experience. If you've booked here, be careful. There's a high possibility you won't be able to check in that day and could end up sleeping on the street.
