City Lodge Guest House

The room was clean and the location was good, and I appreciate that they texted back with apologies. But the bathroom in room 105 smelled strongly of raw sewage all night during my stay on 18th September 2025. There was no power to any socket, so I couldn't use the TV or make a hot drink. I couldn't reach anyone on the contact number. I left a message and emailed the issues at about 7am. Power came back at 9.15am, just before I left. They made clear there'd be no compensation or discount, so I'll pay full price. It feels like they don't care. Don't expect anything else.

The property was clean, but the stay didn't feel worth the price. The room offered little for the cost, and the toilet door wasn't secure, which was uncomfortable when sharing. It would also have helped to have someone on-site when we needed assistance. Breakfast was included but disappointing: just bread, butter, juice and nothing hot or fresh. The juice didn't look very appealing, and it wasn't clear when it had last been refilled.

The coded entry felt secure and meant we didn't have to carry bulky hotel keys. The code arrived 24 hours beforehand, as promised. The room was beautifully clean, and the blackout blinds helped us sleep well. It's ideally placed for Gloucester Quays and the Historic Docks, both within walking distance of the city centre. Better than I expected from a 3 star hotel.

We were lucky to find somewhere else much better, and after reading some reviews I'm very glad we didn't stay here. Getting to that point was dreadful. There was no communication before the visit, and we had to involve Airbnb to get an answer to our query about the missing entry link. We finally got the details as we were setting off to travel. After driving three hours to Gloucester, we found out the booking had been cancelled. Airbnb were very helpful, arranged a refund and added a gesture for the awful treatment. The company then told me they hadn't cancelled, but Airbnb said they'd acted on the company's instruction. A refund was only given because the host cancelled. I messaged the company again to ask why they'd cancelled and why they hadn't contacted us. They read my messages and ignored them. From other reviews, the place sounds disgusting. Absolutely dreadful.
