The owner shared loads of interesting local history about the building and the area. It’s a wonderful old place near Hadrian’s Wall, and the staff were very accommodating with our family of four. Breakfast was cooked to order in a beautiful room. We also had a lovely dinner: the mixed grill is well worth having, and the pizza was excellent. Highly recommend staying here.

Make sure you read about the building’s history, it’s so interesting. This was one of our favorite stops during a three-month trip. The hotel sits in a beautiful historic building overlooking a river and a quaint English town. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful, the room was quiet and comfortable, and breakfast couldn’t have been better. We highly recommend it.

It was a quiet Monday lunchtime, and a charming Philippino lady was doing her books when I went inside the historic hotel. I’d spotted the anchor hotel while crossing the South Tyne on the newer vehicle bridge and fancied a beer and a look around. It’s in a prime riverside spot, with outdoor seating and a carpark.

We spent a couple of hours on the deck looking over the River South Tyne. The views were beautiful, the beer choice was okay and reasonably priced, and the bars were clean. There was a lively atmosphere that evening. I didn’t see the rooms or try the food.

The decor was quite original and dated, but there was nothing wrong with it. The bed had two mattresses for some reason, though it was still okay. Across the river there’s a good pub for drinks, and a chippy and pizza shop are across the road.
