The breakfast alone made this stay stand out. My husband had the full English, and I chose oak-smoked trout with scrambled egg and lemon crème fraîche. Both were cooked fresh, and there was a big continental buffet too. It was the best hotel breakfast we’ve had, and it was included in the price. We stayed last night in a superior room. It looked lovely and faced the park, where the daffodils were out. Daniel was helpful throughout, and the bar staff brought our drinks over while we relaxed in the cosy lounge. The menu for Hexham restaurant week looked tempting, so it’s worth checking and booking a table. There’s a small car park beneath the hotel. If it’s full, they can help with free on-street parking. Amy handled our booking brilliantly, and Florin and Roger looked after us during the stay. We’d happily recommend the place.

The starters were the best part of lunch. My soup was full of flavour, and the warm sourdough with it was lovely. After that, things went downhill. The gnocchi for £19 was starter-sized, with barely any sauce, and what was there tasted bland. We ordered double espressos too, but they were closer to singles. A friendly waiter brought extra hot water, which helped, though I still felt overcharged for two doubles. The woman serving us was blunt and didn’t pay much attention. Nobody checked on us during the meal, or I’d have raised these issues then.

We had a warm, comfortable room with a good layout and everything we needed. The food, restaurant, and staff were all brilliant, and there’s plenty to explore nearby. We reserved one of the private car park spaces with an EV charger, so the car was ready for the day when we left.

The rooms are beautifully done, and the ones away from the road are quiet. It has the feel of a restaurant with rooms, with really good food whether you’re having breakfast or a more elaborate dinner. The people working here are lovely too. A wonderful hotel to stay in.

You can walk to everything from this welcoming spot, right by the park and the Abbey in Hexham’s main commercial area. It seems to be popular with locals as well as visitors. The hotel itself is cosy and comfortable, and the staff were excellent. They helped us check in, get settled in our room, and looked after us over the several meals we had there. We’ll be back.
