Well Parc Hotel

After a long walk on the Southwest Coast path, we came down from the nearby campsite for dinner. It was a friendly, welcoming place with good food, generous portions and a nice choice of beers and ciders. The garden is particularly lovely, with bay views and evening sun.

We found it by chance and stayed overnight on the spur of the moment. The hotel staff were welcoming and friendly, and couldn’t have been more accommodating. The food was fabulous, and the bar had the sort of wines I like, especially good quality red. The views and beach walks are spectacular. The homely, family-run feel reminded me of the similar hotel my parents had when I was a child.

There’s a direct path from the back of the property towards the beach, which makes the location handy for the SWCP. Our room was a good size and had fantastic views, though it was dated. The bar is a hub for local activities, which may or may not appeal. Food was available and adequate, if nothing fancy. Breakfast couldn’t be booked ahead, but was available. When we came down, though, nobody was in the hotel to take payment, which would have made things tricky.

For the low price, location and clean room, it was worth the money. The setting is lovely, but the special beach path is hard to find and needs signs. The gardens and grounds could be amazing, though the caravans need cleaning and a proper slab or setting. The hotel and pub felt like someone’s home with a few rooms to rent. The whole place is tired and run down, but has great potential if someone puts time and money into taking it seriously. There was clutter and damp on the corridor walls, but the rooms were clean, the linen smelled fresh and the bed was comfortable. The carpets should go, especially with a shower on carpet. I think it should welcome dogs, which would set it apart and wouldn’t make it much dirtier. They could charge another 25 or 50 for cleaning.
