The noise was a big problem for us. Guests were loud on their phones and banging doors from midnight until 5am, which frightened my 7-year-old. I phoned reception, but nothing was done. After getting back to normality in Norfolk, we could see the website photos must be from years ago and make the hotel look far more charming than it is. Other reviews describe the same disappointing stays, and the hotel’s thank-you response to feedback seems to placate people without fixing the problems. Our room was in a very run-down state, with mismatched paint, blinds that didn’t cover the windows, and grime around the toilet base. The shower rail wasn’t attached to its fixing and had been held up with a makeshift arrangement. Old shower fittings and screw holes were still scattered across the walls. Breakfast was poor too, with one sausage, bacon and an egg that wasn’t hot or enjoyable. The room felt like a scene from Bottom. I wouldn’t stay here if you expect any sort of standard in or around Rochdale.

Breakfast was so bad that we skipped it the second morning. There was only one choice, a greasy fry-up that took 45 minutes to arrive. The drinks we ordered never came, one person’s food was missing items, and the white toast looked barely toasted. Cold choices like pastries would help. The room itself was fine for the price. The beds were clean and comfortable, there was free parking, and we had complimentary soap and body wash plus plenty of tea and coffee. The building is old, which didn’t bother me. We’d read some terrible reviews and weren’t looking forward to the stay, but the room was better than expected. The breakfast needs a serious rethink.

We’d stay here again. The helpful staff quickly sorted out our request to move rooms, and the building itself is beautiful. The rooms are basic and old-fashioned, as you’d expect in an older place, but for the price it was good value. There’s parking on site too.

We got five nights of bed and breakfast for two for under £300, so the limited breakfast choice was easy to accept. It was nice enough, and I’d happily recommend the hotel. We’re still here until Wednesday and will come back. I’d been unsure about booking after seeing negative reviews, but the welcome was warm and the hotel was spotless. The bedroom smelled really fresh, and we were pleasantly surprised by the large smart TV.

For £56, the room was an absolute steal. It was huge, with a four-poster bed, a park view and a separate bathroom area with a toilet, shower and sink. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable, though the place does have an old feel. I slept really well and had breakfast overlooking the view. The staff made me feel welcome, and the location is great. I’d read some reviews and wasn’t expecting much, but the building looked amazing from outside. Inside, the stained glass windows were real works of art. I asked what the building used to be, and the receptionist said it was an old hospital. It had a bit of a haunted feel, which made walking upstairs to the room an experience. I was pleasantly impressed, so don’t always trust a bad review.
