About this property

With Norman cellars dating back to the 12th century and secret passageways in some of its rooms, this inn offers historic accommodations in Rye. It has a huge open log fireplace in the bar, and an award-winning restaurant. Rebuilt in 1420, The Mermaid Inn has been visited by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Prince Edward, as well as celebrities and artists. It retains many beautiful, traditional features, including a secret stairway hidden behind a bookcase. The restaurant has been awarded two AA Rosettes for its fine French and British cuisine. The lounge bar was once frequented by local smugglers, and has a large wooden beam supported by stone pillars. Each room at The Mermaid has charming features, like wooden paneling or carved beds. Rooms all feature a TV and private bathroom, and some have picturesque views over Rye.

The rooms are beautifully decorated, with original features throughout, and the small lounges with open fires are lovely places to sit. This is a gorgeous hotel with so much history. Every staff member we met was friendly, helpful and clearly proud of their work. Breakfast offered plenty of options and was delicious. We ate in the cosy bar in the evening too, and the food was fresh and delicious. We’d highly recommend The Mermaid Inn. We even booked another stay for our wedding anniversary before we left.

The hotel and restaurant teams are absolutely lovely, and the lounges are great for sitting down with a book. We had a great dinner and breakfast, and the place itself is wonderful. My one wish would be for a stronger flow of water from the shower, though in a building that’s almost a thousand years old, that’s not really a problem.

We had a lovely January break in this unusual, cosy and comfortable hotel. The staff are professional and friendly, and really go out of their way to look after guests. We felt very impressed with our short stay and will come back. From the warm welcome on arrival to the delicious breakfast in the beautiful dining room, everything was just right.

The waiting staff made this a pleasant visit, and the age of the building added to the atmosphere. The location was good too. My lamb was described as “rack of lamb”, but I got the tiniest sliver of a single chop beside a pyramid of pulled shoulder wrapped in tough pasta. I couldn’t eat the sloppy pulled meat in that pasta, which took over the plate. I ordered extra vegetables, and they were cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the service, but don’t want to eat here again. The menu and what’s put on the plate need another look.
