The train station was a real bonus. We got to Cambridge in about 10 minutes, and the village itself has lovely old houses, some dating to the 1600s. It’s very quiet, with one shop that also serves as the post office and two friendly pubs that both do food. I did miss having a café for a daytime coffee, though the pubs could do that too. We stayed three nights with our dog and were put in the Stables annex, since dogs aren’t allowed in the main hotel building. Our ground-floor room, number 9, was bright and sunny, with a large comfortable double bed and a nicely sized shower in the ensuite. Breakfast was included and was excellent, served by a lovely lady. They even gave the dog a sausage. There was plenty of space in the gravel car park, with access to the hotel and its grounds, and we could walk out from the back of the hotel onto the village road.

Breakfast was delicious and served hot, and they even cooked a sausage for the dogs. There are some dog-friendly rooms available. The staff made the stay, though. Chris, Shiona, Linda, Eva and Claire were all wonderful, and I’ve never known such kindness in a hotel. Nothing felt like too much trouble. It was a pleasure meeting you all, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Five-star service, and a hotel with plenty of character.

The breakfast was truly lovely. The room needs upgrading, though, and the bathroom floor is badly out of level because of severe subsidence. I really dislike four-poster beds, but this one did have a good mattress. The carpet fitting on the stairs is dangerous and needs attention, especially for us older folk.

The gardens were a real highlight, full of colour and wildlife, and the hotel had a peaceful feel. Inside, the cosy seating in the bar and lounge made it easy to settle in and relax. Our room was incredibly spacious, with a beautiful four-poster bed. The mattress and pillows were so comfortable that we both slept brilliantly. It was a lovely stay, with comfort and character throughout, and I’d definitely come back.

There was plenty of parking, though only three tables were occupied at breakfast. The breakfast itself was good, but my requested over-easy eggs came with hard yolks. My wife’s poached eggs, on the other hand, were beautifully runny. The room was basic but clean and warm, and the bathroom was clean too. The shower was unnecessarily small, especially with a bath there as well. I slept reasonably well despite the rubbery pillows, and appreciated having tea-making facilities.
