The restaurant was packed with locals, which seemed like a good sign, and we were glad we’d booked. The staff were friendly, efficient, and attentive, with no long waits. The menu had plenty of options, including some unusual ones. Our meals arrived quickly, piping hot, and very tasty. The fillet steak was cooked beautifully. We were very impressed with the service. We booked this quirky historic hotel on the day we needed it, unsure whether we’d travel that day, and it was close to the Cathedral we planned to visit. The stairs up to our well-appointed room were uneven, as they must have been hundreds of years ago. The room had a modern bathroom and shower, though the water ran hot and cold at times. Thank you for the stay.

We tried the Sunday carvery on our first visit and really enjoyed it. The meats were cooked just right, with huge Yorkshire puddings and a great range of vegetables. Desserts were lovely, especially the chocolate delice. Attentive staff and a good atmosphere too.

Disappointing stay. A week before we arrived, despite booking well ahead, we were told our twin room couldn’t be provided. We ate there on the first night and it was clearly popular, but the service wasn’t managed well. We sat down at eight, had to chase someone to take our order at 8:30, and the food didn’t arrive until 9:30. Breakfast was another letdown: both sets of eggs were undercooked, and one serving had a bit of shell in it. Then we were charged twice for the rooms. The manager was blunt, which we didn’t appreciate, though some of the other staff were really lovely. It was busy the whole time, so maybe we just had a bad couple of days.

Right in the town center, this characterful historic building was a lovely place to stay after a day touring Salisbury. I had the top-floor suite, and its bath was perfect after walking in the cold rain. The restaurant downstairs served a delicious meal, and the host kindly seated me even though it was late. The salmon was excellent, as was the cheesecake.

My room was beautiful, furnished in a way that really suits the property's age. I loved the building's quirks, and the staff were brilliant. They left us to ourselves but were accommodating whenever we needed anything. Breakfast was great too. The location is right by the town center, yet it stayed quiet. Such a lovely building, and I’d recommend staying here.
