The Rutland Hotel

The quiet location is close to the Hallamshire, and the hotel is clean, with comfortable rooms, though they’re a little small. The staff were pleasant and polite, and the food menu looked fine, with dishes to suit most tastes. I’d stay again. I’ve only given four stars because the restaurant wasn’t open for an evening meal.

Breakfast was included and enjoyable, with a full English as well as cereals, fruit, pastries, juice, coffee, and alternative milk. The hotel is near the town centre, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Our room was clean, the bathroom spotless, and the shower had good pressure. There was a hair dryer and iron, plus bedside lighting, a television, and a kettle. The bed was stain free, with plenty of pillows, and we slept well. We heard no outside noise, even though our room was on the ground floor. The lobby and dining area were clean and nicely decorated for Christmas, with plenty of signs pointing to rooms and other areas. The only letdown was the lack of bedside plugs. I’d be very glad to return to The Rutland.

We’re already booked to come back for my birthday. Last year we used a Wowcher gift from my hubby, and had a spacious, very clean room with a huge bed. There was Prosecco waiting for us when we arrived. We upgraded to afternoon tea in the downstairs conservatory bay, with so many cakes, sandwiches, scones and creams that we were full by the end. The theatre was just a few minutes away by taxi. Breakfast was freshly cooked and DELICIOUS! The hotel does show some wear and tear, and staff said refurbishment is happening gradually. Everyone we met was delightful and couldn’t do enough for us. Well done to the team and management.

The dated rooms could do with a bit of a makeover, but they’re clean, comfortable, and have everything you need. Breakfast is great, and we had one reasonably priced, good meal in the restaurant. What the Rutland really gets right is its staff. Everyone we spoke to was friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. This was our second stay, and we’ll definitely come back.
