The breakfast felt poor for a room costing £400 a night, and the value for money overall was very bad. The setting is beautiful and quiet, but the place feels past its best. A fresh coat of paint for the rooms, tables and chairs, plus updated bathroom taps, would make a real difference without costing much. Even little details like the old, unpleasant peppermill stood out. The mini bar glasses were extremely dirty, and some drinks were past their best-before date. A bit more gardening or housekeeping and a few small investments could improve things a lot.

Our room was spacious and looked out to sea. The staff were friendly, respectful and very attentive, and the setting was beautiful, peaceful and relaxing.

I've been back three times and am already looking forward to another visit. The hotel welcomes dogs, and the friendly staff provide wonderful service. The island is small, but there are lots of places to eat, great walks and water sports. Karma can also arrange boat trips to the other islands.

I first remember this place from a St Martins holiday in the early 90s, when it was too expensive for me. Maybe it's been rebranded since. The setting is superb, and the building fits the island style so carefully. I came on 30 July 25, early, before the hotel was properly ready for lunch, and then had a fairly long wait for a return boat to St Marys. The staff were friendly straight away, though. The Apple and Parsnip soup was superb. The crab sandwich was okay, but too much mayonnaise made it bland, and the crisps were stale. Perhaps that's what happens when you ask for lunch a bit early. It came to £31, which didn't feel outrageous. The restaurant decor felt a little tired, with its HMS Association theme, but the staff, including at least one local person, are clearly making a real effort. That soup was excellent, even if the sandwich let it down a bit. Running a hotel in such a lovely but hard-to-reach place can't be easy. I hope they do well, and gave four stars because the effort is genuine.

The garden was peaceful and quiet, with lovely views over the sea towards Tresco. The setting is stunning, and the staff were very friendly.
