Formerly an 18th-century manor house, Les Douvres Hotel offers scenic gardens and a heated outdoor pool in the summer. Situated in the south-east corner of Guernsey, the property also offers an on-site restaurant with a seasonal menu. My double room, No 7, had a small balcony overlooking the pool, and the plantation shutters suited its rustic feel. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom had a bath with a ceiling shower and plenty of hot water. There was lots of tea and coffee, plus some lovely Border biscuits. The antique furniture fits the hotel’s age well, though you do hear plenty of creaks as you walk around. I stayed two nights while helping set up a Christmas charity event with Aurigny Airlines. Les Douvres is down one of Guernsey’s narrow roads, like much of the island, but it has two good sized car parks. I arrived before the 14.00 check in, and the lovely receptionist arranged a cup of tea while I waited. You need to book a table for dinner. I joined some of the other guys on the job and tried the famous Les Douvres pizza. It was just how I like it, so thumbs up. Table service was excellent, and the staff were very attentive. I’d recommend the hotel to anyone visiting Guernsey.

The location was gorgeous, and my friend and I had a lovely lunch from a varied menu. Our waiter was friendly and very cheerful. We didn’t stay at the hotel, but my friend has, and she says it’s really nice.

We came across the hotel on a walk, went in for a pint, and ended up booking a late-ish Friday dinner slot. The available times were limited, but we got a reservation. When we arrived, Les Douvres was in full swing, with a guitarist playing in the corner. After checking with our server, we shared a pizza and pear-spinach salad, planning to order more if we needed it. We didn’t. The food quantity was just right and the quality was high. The pizza crust was perfectly done, while the salad was fresh and crisp with plenty of grated cheese. Sorbet for dessert and a Real Ale rounded out the meal. Attentive service made it a good night out at Les Douvres. Recommended.

At 12:30, Sunday lunch was quiet; by 13:30, the lively dining room was full. The roasts were very good, and the vegetarian sharing platters were excellent. Food and service were both good overall. I’d recommend Sunday lunch to anyone.

Our family trip to Guernsey was the best possible experience, thanks to the wonderful hotel, brilliant chef and team, and the most welcoming, friendly hotel we’ve ever stayed at. Les Douvres is an absolute gem and fully deserves its top rating. We’d all love to come back. Our thanks to the whole team.
