We managed to book a late Sunday lunch at the last minute and had a great meal. The meat was cooked just right, with a good amount of tasty vegetables, and the nut roast was delicious too. Portions were generous, and the puddings were better than we expected. The pub has a traditional feel and a lovely atmosphere, and both staff and locals made us feel very welcome. We’ll come back to try the main menus.

We found a great deal for a night at the Amberley Inn. Our twin room was cosy and clean, with a lovely view. The setting was peaceful and well placed for Stroud and walking. Everyone was friendly, and we had a fantastic stay. I’d definitely recommend it.

The towels were fabulous. Pretty much everything else left a lot to be desired, sadly. We’ve stayed in many hotels, and this one ranks near the bottom for us. Our small room had a sloping roof, which we’d more or less expected, but the damp and mould on the ceiling and around the window were a surprise. We were in a separate building, away from the main hotel, and had to go outside to reach a tired-looking place that seemed to be a cottage split into rooms. The bathroom layout was poor. To shower, you had to crouch or kneel in the bath, and the toilet faced a radiator with no controls that made your knees very hot. The sink’s hot tap had no water pressure. The listing mentioned toiletries, but there was just one bar of soap and two shampoo-conditioner bottles, with no shower gel or bath soak. Breakfast was okay if you wanted a full English, and the sausage was very good. Croissants were listed but unavailable. The cereal selection was okay, as were the brown and white bread; the jam wasn’t great and the coffee was okay. Ketchup came in sachets, and there was one tiny sachet each of salt and pepper on the plate.

We stopped in for food and a couple of drinks on Thursday, which turned out to be quiz night. The meal was brilliant, the staff couldn’t have been nicer, and the quiz was great fun. Really nice pub. We’d definitely return if we’re nearby again.

The Amberley Inn is under new management now, though the lovely staff are still there. We went for supper as a family and had a fab time. There was a roaring fire, a great choice of beer, and I had a Woodchester Valley rose. We ordered starters and mains, and the food was good. Looking forward to going back.
