The Kiln Hotel Wakefield

We complained to reception within ten minutes of entering the room. They apologised but wouldn’t move us, even though the hotel wasn’t full, and their policy was no refunds. It was tired, dated and dirty, with a vile smell. Flushing the toilet brought up a sewage odour. There were cobwebs and spiders everywhere, and the shower tiles needed a thorough scrub. The walls were paper thin, so we could hear everything from next door. I know it’s a budget hotel, but this wasn’t clean at all. Please don’t stay here.

The breakfast was very good, especially the full English, and the staff were friendly and polite. The room was basic and a little worn, but clean and quiet, with a comfortable bed. It’s conveniently located for motorway access. The confirmation email said the restaurant and bar were open from 5pm to 10pm. We arrived at 9pm, but they’d stopped serving food, which was disappointing after a long drive. The email could have made the kitchen closing time clearer. We managed to order food in and met the driver outside reception.

I slept better than I have in ages. The room was really comfortable, and although the shower wasn’t modern, its pressure and temperature made it the best hotel shower I’ve had.

Lovely little place, and the cleaning staff are very friendly. I booked breakfast for both mornings, but didn’t get it even though the money was taken. I also called customer service to ask about a discounted room rate for an extra night tomorrow, but so far there’s been no response.
