For $500, Tea Rose was a letdown. It's basically a small room with a mini fridge, microwave, and cooktop, like things you'd find in most hotels, yet it cost four times as much. It felt more like a hotel than a cottage or Airbnb. We heard booming music both days, struggled with the code lock, and there was no air conditioning. We also felt like second-class guests, since we weren't allowed on the main porch. The mattress was hard and we could feel the springs. Maybe it would have felt worth the price at half what we paid. Cape May is lovely, and the hot water was the only other thing I can really praise.

Tea Rose, the smallest cottage at the Ashley Rose, was small but workable for a couple staying a week and spending most of the time out. The room was as advertised and relatively clean when we arrived. The location is ideal for Cape May, and I'd come back for that alone. The outdoor showers were handy and the gas grill was nice. There were some things that needed attention: the air conditioning barely blew cold air, even though it wasn't a hot beach week, and the refrigerator worked but its freezer was almost unusable under all the ice. A broom and dustpan would have helped, along with something to clean food surfaces and a few hooks for damp suits and towels. The outside bench was nearly broken and needs replacing. Since the porch is for the main house tenants, there was really nowhere to sit outside.

The AC stayed ice cold through a heatwave. The renovation looks beautiful, and the location is quiet, a short walk from the beach and town. It's dog friendly, and the owner and staff were quick to respond to our needs.

This was far from luxury. The room was disgusting, with stains on the towels, couch, walls, and bathroom faucet. Towel hooks were broken and there were cracks in the ceiling. The fridge didn't work, and the smoke detector was missing. The bathroom was so unclean that I started wondering what else hadn't been cleaned.

The Wild Rose Cottage was a good fit for our family of four: two parents, a 9-year-old, and a 1-year-old. It’s on the small side, but that worked for us. Everything was clean and well cared for, and the owners were quick to help. The DVD player in our room didn’t work. It wasn’t a big deal, but I mentioned it for future guests, and she brought a replacement the next morning. Parking can be a bit of a challenge if you’re staying outside the main house, and you may have to walk several blocks to find a spot. We’d happily stay here again when we’re in Cape May.
