Brandywine River Hotel

We chose this place as a base for Longwood Gardens' Christmas lights, and it worked out really well. It's nearby and easy to get in and out of, with a good Italian restaurant just a short walk down the driveway. We were traveling with two other couples, and each of us had a different room. All were comfortable, though they seem to have their own styles. Check-in went smoothly, and breakfast was continental but well stocked. They kept an eye on supplies, coffee included, so there was enough for everyone. A nice surprise for an overnight visit. I'd recommend it for Longwood or a trip to Kennet Square for the mushrooms.

The location is beautiful, though I think some of the rooms need work. Ours felt dated and overpriced, with old furniture marked by scratches and worn edges. The linoleum was soft underfoot and lifting in spots, and the wifi kept dropping out. We were moved from a second-floor room to a first-floor one with a connecting door. The walls were so thin we heard everything next door, including hard coughing and the TV at 6am. I know the hotel can't control other guests, but it doesn't seem to have done enough to reduce noise in these connecting rooms, which still cost just as much despite the drawbacks. Unless staying in Kennett Square is especially important to you, Exton or Delaware may be better value. We found the room issues disappointing.

We were glad to find the Brandywine River Hotel after looking for somewhere overnight following a visit to Longwood Gardens. The area was great and the price reasonable, and we wanted somewhere with more character than a chain. The lobby felt cozy and festive, and we liked the unique atmosphere. Check-in staff were friendly. Breakfast was included and nice, and there were free cookies too, though dietary restrictions meant we couldn't try them. They looked good!

Room 107 was on the first floor, up an accessible ramp and close to the front desk. Its bathroom was the best handicapped bathroom I've ever encountered: a huge, well-lit roll-in shower with a folding seat and several safety bars. The staff at the front desk and around the hotel were so pleasant and helpful. The lobby fireplace and Christmas decorations looked beautiful. It's also a convenient base for Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, and lots of fine restaurants.
