The room’s problems made our four-day stay disappointing, even though we appreciated the free drinks, snacks, and fresh fruit. Breakfast came in brown boxes from a warming tray. The first one was covered in cheese and bacon and mostly inedible for us. The next day was a little better, with a plain bagel and an egg, but we skipped breakfast the following two days. Our bed was extremely hard, and no one offered to freshen the room or bring clean towels. We saw just one staff member, who was kind and helped us get into the inn. The toilet was broken, so we had to open its tank to flush. The shower head couldn’t be adjusted and sprayed toward the back wall about four feet up. Wallpaper was badly peeling, and the bathroom walls had holes. There were two doors, one to the inside and one outside by a spiral staircase. Both had wide gaps around the edges that let in light and possibly insects. Neither had an interior lock, so we didn’t feel secure. Noise was hard to ignore too, since the inn sits beside a large hospital with emergency vehicles and medevac helicopters operating around the clock.

Getting around was confusing, with no clear signs for the entrance, parking, or rooms. There was nobody on site, and when I called for help no one picked up. Someone did call me back about 10 minutes later. The lobby coffee machine was broken, and there wasn’t any brewed coffee at breakfast. The website promised a “5 star experience,” but this felt more like staying in someone’s house through Airbnb than being at a hotel. My room had no chairs at all, and a huge gap under the door let light and sound through. It was right beside the common area, so there was no privacy. I wouldn’t recommend it.

We chose The Ashley because we wanted something cheaper than downtown Charleston options while keeping the feel of a historic hotel, and it delivered. It’s a quiet, charming neighborhood, and our room was clean, cozy, and everything worked. King Street is about a 20-30 minute walk; we liked the stroll and not having to find parking. Free parking at The Ashley is a big perk when many downtown hotels and inns charge daily or require valet. We also took the complimentary bikes down to the battery one morning. Breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and lobby snacks were included each day. We’d definitely recommend it.

The house is lovely and sits in a nice spot, but our room was pretty small and dark. Since we were there only one night, that was manageable. Then a large cockroach showed up in the bathroom on checkout morning, which really brought down the rating. Without that, we probably would’ve given it three stars.

The room was really nice and clean, and the whole place feels cozy and cute, with that historic Charleston character. Shops and restaurants on King Street are only about a 12-minute walk away. We got mixed up about parking, called the property manager, and he came right over to help. He was very pleasant, offered us snacks and refreshments in the common area, then showed us to our room. There’s also great coffee and bagels in the morning, plus lots of other drinks and snacks. Such a nice touch, thank you!
