Courtyard by Marriott Charlottesville University Medical Ctr

My son had been playing with my watch the night before we checked out, and it went missing. I forgot to look for it in the morning and realized it was gone after we’d left. I contacted the hotel, but someone had already booked the room, so they couldn’t check it right then. Management was uncooperative and reluctant even to speak with housekeeping, as if I were accusing someone instead of simply asking them to check. I found their response insulting and very unprofessional, almost as though they were trying to cover something up. The watch was a wedding gift from my wife and irreplaceable. I took my 3-year-old son along when I dropped my daughter off at UVA a couple of years ago. We’ve always loved staying in Charlottesville, and we’d stayed at this hotel before mostly for the location, since everything else was average. This visit wasn’t great. There are plenty of other options around Charlottesville and UVA. I recommend staying elsewhere. The service rating only goes down to one star, but I’d give it zero or negative stars if I could.

The location is great, right by the university and within walking distance of a lot. But Saturday night cost a little over $500, which felt way too expensive for what you get. I expected much more. The Hampton Inn across the street is half the price, and honestly its room would be the same or maybe better. Hampton Inn also includes free breakfast. Everything else was good, but this just wasn’t worth the price of admission when you can get the same for a lot less.

I made a reservation without realizing the hotel used a third party. I called to dispute that refund protection had been declined when it hadn’t been offered, even though I wanted it. Somehow that led to the reservation being canceled and the hotel refusing a refund. When I contacted the manager, Jacklyn, she was rude, wouldn’t listen to our concerns, and offered no help. Terrible management and customer service while we tried to resolve an issue someone else had created.

I was concerned about staying here after reading the other reviews, but the room was nice and clean. The pull-out couch was really uncomfortable. The check-in staff were so nice and helpful, though, and the woman working breakfast alone on Saturday morning was working hard and still kind. No issues with the location.
